Police directing traffic? What’s that?

June 27th, 2006 No comments

Yesterday, an accident caused the M61 to be closed northbound between junction 6 and 8 (there is no junction 7). Not surprisingly, chaos ensued on the surrounding roads, including the A6 and A6027 and while that is to be expected, this was further compounded by the total lack of any police presence to direct traffic.
When was the last time you saw a police officer directing traffic? Do they still do this? Are they still trained to do this?

Lack of lights in Spray

May 26th, 2006 No comments

I’ve just driven down the M6 in heavy rain and surface spray and it is amazing how many people consider side-lights to be sufficient to be seen. What’s totally unbelievable, however, is how many people have no lights on whatsoever, making them virtually invisible!

How Gadgets have changed

May 7th, 2006 No comments

Here’s an interesting article looking at gadgets now and then.

Regarding the removable storage, I always find it scary how today’s removable storage (USB disks in your pocket for example) compare to internal storage say 15 years ago. Most files nowadays (digital camera jpegs for example) won’t even fit on a 3.5″ floppy.

To be honest, I found the older video games much more addictive. You switched it on and started playing. Today, you have to spend a significant amount of time either learning all the various controls, or setting up the game environment before you even start. I get bored and switch it off.

Looking forward to part 2…

Getting hammered by Google for no return

April 5th, 2006 No comments

Google’s bot has been hammering my site throughout March (over 16,000 hits, more than 70% of traffic). So what do I have to show for all this bandwidth usage? Three measly supplemental links, all well out of date, one of which has been banned in my robots.txt file for more than two years!
What the hell is Google up to?

Apple Mail shows BDT instead of BST

April 5th, 2006 No comments

We recently changed to British Summer Time in the UK, but Apple Mail is showing the datetimestamp with ‘BDT’:
Screen Grab showing BDT
Now checking in System Preferences, clearly shows the timezone as BST and location UK.
Interestingly, changing the ”long” time format under international settings from ‘GMT’ to ‘Greenwich Mean Time’ makes mail display:
Screen Grab showing British Daylight Time
So it would appear that someone at Apple thinks we call it ‘British Daylight Time’. I’ve reported it as a bug, but I can’t see this being fixed any time soon. Now if it was a PST/PDT issue, that would be a different story.

UPDATE

I have received a reply from Apple, saying “After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering.” Hmmm…

UPDATE: 24th July 2006

Still nothing from Apple, although I have found this bug report on the Common Locale Repository. The actual page showing the wrong data is here. (scroll down to No. 348). If Apple use this as their source, then this could be the reason for the error.

UPDATE: 13th March 2007

The Common Locale Repository appears to have been fixed, so it remains to be seen if Apple have picked up the changes. The Clocks go forward in a couple of weeks time, so we’ll see if Apple Mail shows the correct data. (Not surprisingly, they haven’t and Mail still shows BDT)

UPDATE: March 2009

I don’t know when they fixed it, but Leopard Mail is showing BST.

How free is a free holiday?

March 7th, 2006 339 comments

My wife got a phone call today (from 01268 555095), saying that because she had answered a questionnaire in Bolton, she had won first prize in a draw – a seven night luxury 5-star holiday to a European resort (Costa del Sol, Canary Islands, Portugal or the Balearics) in a ‘luxury’ self-catering apartment, flights included, but insurance would be required and there was also a GBP 34.50 admin fee payable per person on booking. The vouchers would also be valid for 18 months. Hmmm… since when does a 5-star holiday involve self-catering?

Being skeptical, she asked what the catch was, but was told “no catch”. “Isn’t this timeshare?”, “No it’s not timeshare”, a point that while truthful is not actually good – see later. All she had to do was ring GVC Travel on 0871 222 8028 quoting a reference number.
