New Classic Rock Station for Manchester

April 24th, 2008 No comments

106.1 Rock Radio ManchesterThere’s a new classic rock station starting in Manchester – 106.1 Rock Radio. The good news is that it is currently in test broadcast, so it’s playing classic rock back to back without any adverts. Unfortunately, that luxury will end on 5th May at 6pm when the station officially launches.

CDs cheaper than Downloads

September 9th, 2007 3 comments

CDs cheaper than Download?I went looking on iTunes for an old album I used to have on tape, and sure enough – there it was for £7.90. Hmmm a bit pricey, so I looked on play.com and there it was for only £4.99.

So for almost three quid less, you get:

  • a real CD in a case with professionally printed cover notes. For iTunes, add the cost of a case, CD and printer ink;
  • no crippling DRM;
  • full bitrate recording instead of high compression;
  • you can still rip the CD onto your iPod;
  • if you get fed up of it (or wasn’t to your taste) you can still sell it on.

Most CDs are available from play.com and cdwow.com for around £7.99, so even at that price it’s still better to get the CD.

So what, apart from satisfying your impatience, is the attraction of downloading music?

Apple iTunes Music Store Europe Opens

June 15th, 2004 No comments

Went to the Apple iTMS – it was empty.

So Apple have finally got round to opening in the UK, but where are all the tracks? 700,000 may sound a lot, but not when it’s full of dross from bands no-one’s ever heard of. Several artists are listed, but with no tracks, or a single obscure track. Where’s Madonna, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley?

According to The Register, several record labels are holding out. Do these labels really prefer people to copy/download illegal CDs or are they going to realise that the rip-off years are over, and get with the future of music publishing.

We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks. At least it’s here now.
