Using .asp and cookies to implement a MOTD

February 27th, 2007 No comments

code tagIf you want your webpage to display a message of the day (MOTD) for the first time your users access the page and not again until the next day, you can achieve this using a cookie.

Basically, it checks to see if the date stored in the cookie is before today and displays the appropriate page content. Once it has been displayed, it sets the date in the cookie to today to prevent any further display until tomorrow.

' If the date in the stored cookie is before today
< % If (Request.Cookies("CookieName")("LastVisit") < Date) Then %>

This text will only be displayed the first time the page is accessed each day

' Now the message has been displayed,
' set the date in the cookie to today's date
< % Response.Cookies("CookieName")("LastVisit") = Date end if %>

Aviation Humour Part 1

February 22nd, 2007 No comments

These are supposed to be actual exchanges between pilots and control towers. Not sure how true they are but they are still funny.

Tower: “Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o’clock, 6 miles!”
Delta 351: “Give us another hint! We have digital watches!”

Tower: “TWA 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 degrees”
TWA 2341: “Center, we are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here?”
Tower: “Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727?”

From an unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: “I’m f…ing bored!”
Ground Traffic Control: “Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!”
Unknown aircraft: “I said I was f…ing bored, not f…ing stupid!”

B&Q redefine Feet and Inches

February 12th, 2007 No comments

B&Q SignIn an effort to help its customers with the difference between Metric and Imperial units, B&Q appears to gone a stage further and redefined the Imperial system.

Note that I am not talking about the conversion from metric to imperial, that’s always going to be approximate. Look at the last two columns.

Surely 1’11” is 23″ not 24″

Similarly, there are 36″ in 3 feet.

Every single one is wrong.

Snow? What Snow?

February 8th, 2007 No comments

Well surprise surprise, London and the home counties are affected by snow, so that means it’s national headline news.

I woke this morning to a clear (but cold morning). I didn’t even have to clear the windows on the car, but according to BBC Breakfast, it’s the end of the world. They’re even talking about snowfall in centimetres. Is this to make it sound more than it really is? 5cm sounds more impressive than a measly 2 inches. The rest of Europe must be laughing at the pathetic Brits.

If the tables were turned and the North of England and Scotland were covered in snow, then it would hardly get a mention. The Scots must be even more annoyed at this southern centric reporting.

The sooner the BBC move up to Manchester, the sooner we can start to reverse this southern bias in reporting.

The real reason for Erosion of Trust

February 2nd, 2007 No comments

It seems that Hazel Blears has started to whinge about the police investigation into ‘cash-for-peerage’ claims, saying that it is “eroding trust” in the Government.

Maybe she forgets that trust is earned. Perhaps if she took a look at what the Government has done to this country over the last ten years, she will see the real reason for the erosion of trust.
