Opening the USB cover on a Nokia 6300

I get so many search engine hits on my Nokia 6300 post where the search string is “How do I open the USB cover on Nokia 6300” that I thought I’d knock up a quick post on this.

To be perfectly honest, I’m quite curious as to why people are asking this in the first place. It’s not that difficult and if you’re not sure, I’m sure it’s in the manual. Anyway, if you’re still struggling read on…

The USB socket is located on the bottom of the phone. To open the cover there is a slot to the left of the cover.

Insert your fingernail… (if you’ve got no nails or you’re a girly with nails you don’t want to break, a small flat bladed screwdriver is just as good)

and flick it towards you. The cover hinges down.

Open USB Cover

The cover is now open.

Hey thanks for the info on how to open that USB cover. It’s actually not in the manual! The problem stems from the cover being very stiff the first few times it is opened, and whilst it’s easy enough to have an educated guess as to how the thing opens, it’s hard to work up the courage to put enough force into it to make it open. You know how easy it is to break these crappy bit of consumer electronics. Your pics confirmed the thing does in fact open the way I thought it might, so I got my little screwdriver and levered the hell out of it until it opened. I’d already broken my nail in an earlier attempt!

Peter, my wife also recently got a Nokia 6300, which because she only actually uses it for a phone, has never had the USB cover opened. I had no trouble flipping it open first time with nothing more than my fingernail.

“Not that difficult” my @$$… the reason you get so many search engine hits is the Nokia 6300 USB cover actually IS really stubborn and hard to open, as Peter above notes. I see from the picture that the phone you used has a slot along the left hand side. Nowhere in the manual does it mention how to access this covering, and only through sheer perseverance was I able to get mine open. So thank you for posting this online guide. I’m sure many people will find it as helpful as I have.

Michael, glad it helped, although I would reiterate that we have two 6300s and neither was difficult to open first time.

Maybe there is a difference in component batches depending on when and where each 6300 was manufactured, and that the dimensions are sufficiently different to cause a tight fit.

It does seem to be missing from the manual though.

Thanks indeed for your post. So far I haven’t open the usb cover as I was afraid I would broke the cover. I thought this is a fake port and reserved for other model of mobile. (There are serveral fake ports on my laptop).
I have to say it is really a bad design by Nokia, which confuses so many people including me. Anyway, I will try another time this evening.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial, the cap is indeed very stubborn, I just bought the device and was afraid to break it before I used it.

Wow… am I glad I googled this! I actually considered cutting off the USB port cover until I read somewhere that it actually softens with use. And no, it’s not in the manual. I was able to open it by taking off the back cover. I’ll try this method from now on, although I’ll have to wait for my fingernails to grow back, lol. Thanks!
